Use the Display Rules check box of the Simplification tab of the Options > Mode Settings command19_L5FP to turn Display Rules mode on or off.  On is the factory default Display Rules mode.

When Display Rules mode is on and an expression is step-simplified using the Simplify > Display Step command76D46L or in Display Steps modeDisplay_Steps_mode, immediately before the result, a new text object is created showing the transformation rule that was applied.

The variables z and w appearing in a transformation rule (also called a re-write rule) indicate that the rule is true for any real or complex values that they may have.  The variables x and y indicate that the rule is true for any real values that they may have.  Qualification of a variable (for example, "If n is a positive integer") indicates that the rule is true for those values of the variable.

Like all text objects in the algebra window, display step transformation rules can be hidden by the Options > Hide > Text commandELLDUY.
